Danish Gløgg

Danish Gløgg

For centuries, Danish Gløgg has been a beloved holiday tradition in Denmark, synonymous with warmth, coziness, and the joy of the season. This mulled wine recipe infuses red wine with a blend of aromatic spices, including cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and orange peel, creating a rich and flavorful beverage perfect for sipping by the fire on a cold winter’s night. Brandy or aquavit adds depth and complexity to the drink, while raisins and almonds provide delightful bursts of sweetness and texture. Whether enjoyed at festive gatherings or savored quietly at home, Danish Gløgg brings comfort and cheer to all who partake in its heartwarming flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750ml) red wine
  • 1 cup brandy or aquavit
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup blanched almonds
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 6 cloves
  • 6 cardamom pods, lightly crushed
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, combine the red wine, brandy or aquavit, raisins, almonds, orange slices, cloves, cardamom pods, and cinnamon sticks.
  2. In a separate small saucepan, dissolve the sugar in water over medium heat, stirring constantly.
  3. Once the sugar has completely dissolved, add it to the pot with the other ingredients.
  4. Heat the mixture over low heat, stirring occasionally, until hot but not boiling. Let it simmer gently for about 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  5. Strain the gløgg through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the spices and fruit slices.
  6. Serve the gløgg warm in mugs or heatproof glasses, garnished with additional orange slices or cinnamon sticks if desired.
